When Francis, Anton, and Joseph Korbel arrived in Northern California in the late 19th century, they started a cigar box business. But after their factory was destroyed in a fire, they turned their entrepreneurial spirit to using the soil in the Russian River Valley, northwest of Sonoma. What they found there was the perfect landscape for a vineyard, one that created the foundation of a new business that celebrates its 140th anniversary this year. Acquired in 1954 by the Heck family, the Korbel brand has played a key role in helping people celebrate life’s special occasions, big and small, for generations.

Korbel Brut and Korbel Extra Dry, the winery’s mainstays, have paved the way for newer champagnes such as Korbel Natural, Korbel Blanc de Noirs, Korbel Brut Rosé, and Korbel Sweet Rosé. All Korbel California Champagnes are made using the traditional méthode champenoise bottle fermentation process. That process begins in the vineyard where grapes are harvested for Korbel Brut about two weeks earlier than is typical for still wines. The early harvest promotes the delicate, crisp, bright flavors of this varietal, which pairs well with anything from chocolate to caviar.
