TEAM FITZPATRICK
Coming off his win at the RBC Heritage last week, Team Troon’s Matt Fitzpatrick found himself paired with a very familiar face at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans this past weekend: his younger brother Alex, who turned pro last year. The unique pairing came about thanks to a tournament format far from the stroke play typically used in PGA TOUR events. Instead, two-man teams competed in alternating-round Four-ball and Foursomes.
That was no problem for Team Fitzpatrick, who stormed to the early lead with a 10-under round of 62. “We did great,” said Matt.” I played really solid on the front nine, he played great on the back nine, and he bailed me out a few times, which was obviously very beneficial, and yeah, it was a great day.”
The duo cooled off with a second round score of 1-under, but then roared back with another 62 in the third round, leaving them tied for seventh and just 5 strokes back of leaders Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler. But a concluding round of 74 left the brothers tied for 19th overall.
“I think winning the U.S. Open obviously you get a few extra perks, people kind of want to help you out and want you to come play the tournament, and obviously this was an opportunity to play with my brother, and you don’t know how many of those you’re going to get,” Matt said prior to the tournament. “For me, obviously I’m going to have to admit it now in front of everyone, but yeah, it was a no-brainer for me. It was always one I was looking to try and play.”
Elsewhere in the world of Team Troon, the first major of the LPGA season was a tough one for Yealimi Noh. At The Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods, The Woodlands, Texas, she shot 76-72 to miss the cut. On the PGA TOUR, Alex Noren and Gary Woodland will represent Team Troon this weekend in the Mexican Open at Vidanta. Over on PGA CHAMPIONS, Colin Montgomerie competed in the Invited Celebrity Classic at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, carding scores of 73-72-74 to finish tied for 73rd. Having played in six events so far in 2023, Montgomerie is currently ranked 41st in the season-long Schwab Cup standings.
